One mineral, more than 300 jobs in your body
Magnesium is a cofactor in over three hundred enzyme reactions, including muscle contraction, nerve function, blood pressure, glucose regulation and heart rhythm. When daily intake falls short, all of that work has less to run on.
Muscles that relax after they work
Magnesium helps muscles both contract and release. As a neuromuscular therapist, I see what tight, overworked tissue feels like every day.
A steady heart and healthy circulation
Magnesium plays a role in cardiac function and in how the body uses calcium, potassium and sodium.*
Energy at the cellular level
Magnesium helps turn carbohydrates, fats and amino acids into usable energy, and it helps your body use vitamins B6, C and E.*
Magnesium bonded to glycine, for a gentler way to take it
Each vegetarian capsule provides 120 mg of magnesium as magnesium glycinate, a chelate in which magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine. Pure Encapsulations describes this form as highly bioavailable and less likely to cause loose stools in sensitive people than other forms of magnesium.*
The formula is short and clean: magnesium glycinate, a vegetarian capsule (cellulose, water) and ascorbyl palmitate. It's made without gluten or GMOs, which suits people with sensitivities.

The science behind magnesium, honestly summarized
These studies looked at magnesium supplements in general, not this exact product. Results apply to the people studied.
Blood pressure
A 2025 meta-analysis of 38 randomized trials (2,709 adults) found magnesium lowered blood pressure slightly overall. The effect was larger in people with high blood pressure or low magnesium levels, and there was no significant effect in people whose pressure was already normal.
Headache support
The American Academy of Neurology and the American Headache Society rate magnesium as "probably effective" for migraine prevention. The doses studied often exceed everyday limits, so they should only be used under a clinician's supervision.
Heart, bones and metabolism
Large population studies link higher magnesium intake with better cardiovascular, bone and glucose health. These are associations, and supplement trials are still limited, so magnesium is best thought of as a foundation rather than a cure.
How to take it
= 120 mg magnesium
(manufacturer's suggested use)
| Daily capsules | Magnesium provided | How it compares |
|---|---|---|
| 1 capsule | 120 mg | A gentle starting amount that adds to food sources |
| 2 capsules | 240 mg | Within the range used in many blood pressure trials (about 243–973 mg/day) |
| 3 capsules | 360 mg | Slightly above the 350 mg limit. Use only if your clinician recommends it. |
| 4 capsules | 480 mg | Above the 350 mg limit. Use only if your clinician recommends it. |
Recommended daily magnesium from all sources: men 400–420 mg; women 310–320 mg (350–360 mg in pregnancy). The 350 mg upper limit applies to supplements and medications only, not to food. Source: NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.
Safety, cautions and interactions
- Talk to your clinician first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have any health condition, or take any medication (manufacturer's caution).
- Kidney problems: impaired kidney function raises the risk of magnesium building up in the body. Don't use without medical supervision.
- Antibiotics: magnesium can bind tetracyclines (e.g. doxycycline) and quinolones (e.g. ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin). Take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after magnesium.
- Osteoporosis drugs: take oral bisphosphonates such as alendronate (Fosamax) at least 2 hours apart from magnesium.
- Diuretics and acid reducers: some diuretics and long-term proton pump inhibitors change magnesium levels. Your clinician may want to monitor you.
- Too much: high doses can cause diarrhea, nausea or cramping. Stop and seek care for weakness, low blood pressure or an irregular heartbeat.
Interaction and limit information: NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, Magnesium fact sheet.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between magnesium glycinate and other forms?
Glycinate binds magnesium to the amino acid glycine. Pure Encapsulations describes it as highly bioavailable and less likely to cause loose stools than other forms. Forms like oxide, citrate and chloride are more often linked with digestive upset.*
When is the best time to take it?
The label says to take it with food. Many people split capsules between meals for comfort. If you take antibiotics or osteoporosis medication, space them from magnesium as described in the safety section.
How many capsules should I take?
The manufacturer suggests 1–4 capsules daily (120–480 mg). Most adults should stay at or below 350 mg a day from supplements unless their clinician advises otherwise, so 1–2 capsules is a typical everyday range.
How long does a bottle last?
At 1 capsule a day, a 90-capsule bottle lasts 3 months; at 2 a day, about 6 weeks. Larger 180- and 360-capsule sizes are available.
Can I take it with my multivitamin?
Usually, yes, but check how much magnesium your multivitamin already provides and count it toward your daily total.
